From Stephen Wagner, your Guide to Paranormal
There's no doubt, as far as I'm concerned, that ghost and haunting phenomena are real. That doesn't mean that every unexplained noise or sight is a ghost, however; there could be natural explanations. The trick is to know the difference. See this week's feature. Of course, I always want to know about your experiences with ghosts, weird creatures and other phenomena, so you should always feel free to write to me and send your photos. The more we can share this information, the closer we can get to understanding it.

What Should I Do If My House Is Haunted?
Do you feel there are strange things going on around your house, such as unexplained sounds, sights, and feelings? Do you suspect that ghosts are to blame? Here's what you can do to help find out for sure -- and then do something about it.

The Anguished Man: haunted painting?
Sean Robinson says he has been experiencing strange activity that he thinks might be caused by a strange painting he owns called "The Anguished Man." He says he has even recorded some of the phenomena. Here is his latest report.

From Stephen Wagner, your Guide to Paranormal
In this week's feature you'll find the results and winner of our remote viewing experiment. Maybe we won't win any awards for psychic ability, but it was rather fun. Stay tuned for more contests. And if you have suggestions for other experiments or contests, please let me know. Also see my mini-rant about debunkers, and of course there's the paranormal news for this week.

Remote Viewing Experiment Results
The results are in for our second remote viewing experiment. How did you do? Well, only one reader -- Dirk Rezelman -- came close to describing the postcard's location and scene. The postcard, pictured above, is a vintage card depicting a color illustration of the Canal Lock at Little Falls, New York, where I live. See all of the reader views I received as well as Dirk's winning description.

The Ouija Debate
There's an ongoing debate about the powers and realities of the Ouija board. Essentially, there are three basic positions: • It is inherently dangerous, can open portals to evil entities and should never be used. • It is only dangerous if used with evil intent, but can be a useful tool for spirit mediumship if used properly and with good intent. • It is inherently harmless and has no real powers of mediumship for good or evil; its effects, if any, are only psychological in nature. Which is true? Read more

Mars anomaly - a cosmic ray? Where's the evidence?
Last week we featured, as many other news outlets did, a photo and video put together by David Martines of an anomaly on Mars that he found with Google Mars. Alfred McEwen, a planetary geologist at the Lunar and Planetary Lab at the University of Arizona, says it's not a structure at all, but a glitch caused by a cosmic ray striking the orbiter's imaging system. He may be right, but here's what annoys me about this claim: he offers no evidence.

ILLINOIS HAUNTINGS: MORE TALLES FROM THE HAUNTED PRAIRIE
BY TROY TAYLOR & GUIDES FROM THE ILLINOIS HAUNTINGS TOURS

For nearly two decades, Troy Taylor has been chronicling the haunted history of Illinois, from its ghost-infested houses to its abandoned graveyards and beyond. In this volume of hauntings from the Prairie State, Taylor has recruited the staff of the award-winning Illinois Hauntings Tours to submit stories and accounts of their favorite haunts from every corner of the state, resulting in a collection of tales from Taylor and the motley crew that have never appeared in any other book in the Haunted Illinois series before!

Traveling from one end of the state to the other, the book reveals little-known tales from Southern Illinois of ax murders, brutal slayings, mysterious ghost lights, haunted historic sites and more. In Central Illinois, tales of Jacksonville appear in print for the first time, along with hauntings of the James Eldred House, the Great River Road Opry, Greene County Almshouse, Ghost Hollow, Towanda Meadows, Coliseum Ballroom and others. Taylor also adds new stories to the spectral list from Northern Illinois, including Joliet Penitentiary, Marion Lambert, the Naperville Train Crash of 1946 and many others. This is a book that is not for the faint of heart and one that shouldn’t be missed by anyone with a fascination with true Illinois ghost stories! $16.00

AMERICAN HAUNTINGS

WELCOME TO THE NEW ISSUE OF THE NEWSLETTER!
15 JUNE 2011

Welcome to the new issue of the newsletter and while we have a lot to cover in this issue, I want to start out with a HUGE thank you to all of you who attended the 15th Annual Haunted America Conference this past weekend in Jacksonville, Illinois. For the first time in several years, we tried a new location and ended up with an even better turnout than we had hoped! The weekend turned out to be a great success, from the wonderful attendees to the fantastic speakers, and I can't thank everyone enough for their great support for the 2011 event. We had amazing presentations, eerie after-hours events, and all-in-all a great time. We're already looking forward to next year and of course, we'll have details about that coming soon! So again, thanks to the great staff that I couldn't have hosted this event without, the great speakers who put together a series of lectures that kept everyone glued to their seats and the great attendees who made all of the hard work worthwhile! See you again in 2012!

"ILLINOIS HAUNTINGS" BOOK -- AVAILABLE TO ORDER JUNE 20!
You can see more about this below, but just a reminder that the new book from Whitechapel Press, Troy Taylor and the Illinois Hauntings Tour staff will be available to order starting next Monday, June 20! SPECIAL LATE NIGHT SPOOKSHOW AT THE AVON ON JULY 8!
TROY PRESENTS THE "ST. FRANCISVILLE EXPERIMENT"!!

On July 8, I'll be presenting the infamous ST. FRANCISVILLE EXPERIMENT at the Avon Theater's Late Night Spookshow in Decatur, Illinois. Admission is FREE and the show starts at 10:30 PM. Unlike our other Spookshows, where I host the movie and offer an introduction, this time I'll be offering a running commentary throughout this unintentionally hilarious horror movie. That's going to include my own role in the film, behind the scenes information about the filming, and what really occurred to bring this convoluted paranormal movie to the screen. It's going to be a fun night and I hope you'll be there to have a great time with me!

AND SPEAKING OF THE AVON....

As of this morning, we only have 4 spots left for the first ever ghost hunt at the Avon Theater. On July 2, we're opening the theater up for the first time to ghost hunters to search for evidence of the resident spirits. If you want to get in on this first ghost hunt, click here to see the page and make reservations.

MANTENO EVENT CANCELED!
About two weeks ago, we sent out a message to everyone who had signed up for the "Night at Manteno State Hospital" on August 20 to let them that this event had been canceled. Unbeknownst to us, the location was actually closed down when the organizers agreed to host our August event but appartently hoped that it would be re-opened by that time. The Illinois EPA had closed the location due to asbestos levels in the building. We only found out about this recently and despite literally dozens of phone calls, email and messages, we never received a reply from the people in charge of the event. Because of this, we made the decision to cancel. If you did not receive the message we sent out, or have other questions, please contact me. ALL fees for this event have been refunded!

AND THE REST OF THE NEWSLETTER....
Check out the rest of this issue and see what we have coming up... including more about the new Illinois Hauntings book, Troy's upcoming Resurrection Mary Tour, a HUGE Zombie event where I hope you'll celebrate my birthday with me, a new Paranormal Classics piece and more!

Happy Hauntings!

The Accidental Ape

Category: Telepathy; thought-form

From: Sidgwick, et al., pp. 50-53

Where: the Powles’ house in Rye, East Sussex, UK, and the house of the percipient’s friend “Miss B.”, three miles from Rye

When: August 4, 1913

Who: Mr. L. C. Powles, his wife Isabel G. Powles, and James W. Sharpe

How close to source: Mr. Powles, his wife, and the friend, Miss M. B. (name on file with the SPR) all sent in letters describing the incident

Phenomena: On this day in 1913, Miss B. invited the Powles over to meet James Sharpe, who apparently had some reputation for seeing visions or “auras”. Unfortunately, Mrs. Powles felt too ill to travel, so Mr. Powles rode off alone.

Mr. Powles himself had only recently recovered from pneumonia, however, and the wind that day was unusually strong and cold for August. Isabel Powles worried about him, so she started reading the latest issue of The Strand Magazine to occupy her mind. She became engrossed in what she described as “a very horrible story of a man disguised as a gorilla who came behind his enemy and broke his neck with his powerful hands.”

“I have always had a great horror of gorillas from childhood, and far-fetched as it was, I was made very nervous and oppressed by the story,” Mrs. Powles continued.

At Miss B.’s house, meanwhile, tea-time arrived, and the conversation touched upon psychical matters. Mr. Powles asked Sharpe about the “auras” he saw around people, and whether he saw one around him (Powles). At first Sharpe claimed to see nothing, but later he said, ominously, “You asked me to tell you; I do now see something.” Sharpe saw two shapes lurking near Powles. One was a young woman whose description fit well with Mrs. Powles’ appearance. The other, however, was a “dark, non-human, creature behind me with his knotted hands on my shoulder[s].” [Sidgwick, p.53] The woman was trying to “avert this monster’s apparently evil intent.”

Sharpe believed the creature to be a “health-warning”, a symbol of approaching illness. Mr. Powles returned home that afternoon to hear his wife speak of the strange story she had read and of the “nervous state” it left her in. Their conclusion was that Mr. Sharpe had not only “picked up” Mrs. Powles appearance but that of the fictional murderer she had become fixated on.

Oddities: It is rather creepy that Sharpe did not say the woman thought about a hairy creature, but saw it with its paws on Mr. Powles’ shoulders, as killer and victim were described in the story.

Ending: Mr. Powles did not fall ill at any time before writing his account for the Society for Psychical Research (three years later). Rather than a symbolic health-warning, the “gorilla strangler” was a personification of what preyed on Mrs. Powles’ imagination.

Legend: Mr. Sharpe, from what little is mentioned of him, did not normally have such odd visions, nor did the Powles ordinarily undergo psychic readings. The implication is that the juxtaposition of the psychic reading with Mrs. Powles’ story reading created a unique telepathic entity.

Explanation: This might have been a forgettable incident of parlor-magic had Mrs. Powles’ thoughts not been objectified in a form visible to Mr. Sharpe. The concept of a “tulpa” – an entity formed of pure thought – became popularized by the lady explorer Alexandra David-Neel in her 1932 book, Magic and Mystery in Tibet. A “tulpa”, however, supposedly takes months to create and shape, while the “gorilla strangler” sprang whole from a single psychic observation.

Comments: Paranormal investigators Janet and Colin Bord list hundreds of reports of unknown creatures in their book Alien Animals. After concluding that many reported creatures seemed too phantasmal or fantastic to be physical animals, they tackle the problem of what they could be. One possibility “is the idea that the human mind is, by its power of ‘image making,’ capable of creating a physical being which can then exist as an independent creature.” [Bord, p. 191] People might expect to see, or hope to see, or imagine they see a monster, like the hair-covered, semi-human creatures the Bords call BHMs (Big Hairy Monsters). They continue: “So are they solely hallucinatory, taking shape from the archetypal monster image? They might sometimes originate in this way, but then take on an independent existence, feeding by vampirism on whatever energy source is available.” [p. 192]

Even if there is some truth to the Bords’ theories, I am still fascinated by the part chance played in this account. No one expected to see a “monster”. No one tried to create a “tulpa”. The gorilla image came about only because 1) Mrs. Powles happened to read that specific story in that specific magazine on that specific day, 2) it had an exceptionally upsetting effect on her, and 3) Mr. Sharpe happened at that time to examine Mr. Powles’ “aura”. It was truly an accidental ape. It is doubly ironic that it took on a visible existence, since even in Mrs. Powles’ work of fiction there was no real ape.

Perhaps if the Powles had told and re-told the story and others dwelt on the idea of the phantasmal gorilla, it might have taken on a life of its own . . . and perhaps something like this has happened elsewhere, because there are legends in Britain of such things as the Hairy Hands of Dartmoor, the Man-Monkey of Staffordshire, and the Big Grey Man of Ben MacDhui.
